A friend just got back from London, on a work related trip. She wanted to get me something from London, in exchange for the dog-sitting I had done recently, so she went to a gay bookstore, asked for some help, and ended up with How to be a Happy Homosexual, A Guide for Gay Men. [somewhat detailed, perhaps overly fawning review here]. And I'm torn.
The book itself is somewhat interesting, mostly from its use of British slang [reading about buggery in a medical context just doesn't work for me]. And random laws are jaring, like reading about whether or not the National Health Service will carry Viagra. And apparently circle jerks are illegal.
The content would be most useful if I was 16 and just figured out that I was gay. Except, it takes a fairly strong point of view that everyone should be completely out, all the time. Which, if you're a kid, living in your parents' house, and don't have any way of supporting yourself, at the very least, I would question.
So, I guess I'll just take this as a message: "We care about you, want you to be happy, and don't know how to help you be happy."
