I tend to see Jayne as a more sympathetic character, though. Based on (1) He was crying in the first episode, when they didn't know if Kaylee was going to live or die. (2) I think at the beginning of the series he has given his allegence to his captain, he just doesn't see any reason to support a couple of greenhorns. [He was offered a reasonable amount of money to sell everyone out, including the captain, and didn't take it] (3) "What are you going to tell the others?" He cares about what other people think of him, he just doesn't care if everyone thinks he's a mouth-breathing neandrathal.
Or, maybe I just think he's hot. Dunno.
