Actually, a diamond will burn in a large housefire. It requires a fairly hot flame, but they're just carbon, after all.
And on the cool side of things, a materials scientist, who has been working on the problem in his garage, has created a process which makes gemstone quality synthetic diamonds. If you think the diamond industry isn't trying to figure out how to shut him down, I've got a bridge I want to sell to you.
He can't do it yet, but thinks 10 carat diamonds are doable within the year.
H/T: Fark.
Whether that's the same process as this, who knows.
